AAAH, congrats on your masters, that's amazing! I have so many channels in Wiscord muted right now that I think I fully missed that news. Sending good vibes on the job front, and I'm hopeful we'll get to cross paths, too. C:

Do you have a curry recipe you like? I'd love to try to make one sometime, although I would definitely add some garlic (after an appropriate moment of silence over your inability to eat it).

No apology needed, thanks so much for writing this down for me! I'm saving it for later! My kitchen space is tiny and doesn't have all the things a usual kitchen does, so I have to improvise a bit with recipes, but hopefully I can pull this off sometime.

great goals. this year I fell short of my book goal, but far exceeded my film watching goal. this coming year I have to focus a lot on getting the interviews for my book lined up, so I'm debating just not setting any goals and seeing what happens.

also, do you have any specific LA-centric things you're looking for in terms of recs?

Just getting the book in order is a big goal in itself! I can't wait to hear about how it goes. I have a book concept that I want to think about/look into turning into an Actual Thing in 2023, so starting to make that happen will definitely be one of my resolutions, too.

Anything is helpful! If there are whole neighborhoods you love, or outdoor things, or museums, or bookstores, I'm always looking for more of those. I think the only thing I've explored pretty thoroughly so far is the repertory movie theater scene.

here's a few random suggestions of things I loved to do in LA:

I lived in Franklin Village because I love the neighborhood - you can hike up to the Bat Cave (https://modernhiker.com/hike/bronson-caves/), there's Counterpoint Records and Books and The Daily Planet for books and other fun stuff, and for eats theres Birds and La Poubelle.

In Los Feliz, I love Skylight books and Cafe Figaro (although this piece will make you yearn for a time machine: https://archive.nytimes.com/cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/22/the-lost-village-mystique-of-le-figaro-cafe/), both of which you've probably been to if you've been to the Los Feliz 3. There's also Little Dom's, Home, and Desert Rose

Out in the Valley I love Bob's Big Boy (https://bobs.net/pages/hall-of-fame-david-lynch), Iliad Bookshop, Atomic Records and Chili John's

Other bookstores I love: The Last Bookstore, Larry Edmunds, Sideshow Books, Book Soup, Alias Books, Vromans, and Mystery Pier

Other record stores I love: Record Safari, The Record Parlor, Record Surplus, Gimme Gimme Records, Permanent Records, Rockaway Records, and Paradise City

A few one off places scattered around the city I love: The Formosa, The Apple Pan, Akbar, El Coyote, Musso and Frank's, Miceli's, Boardner's, and Canter's

This is brilliant, and it really means a lot to me that you took the time to put these recs together, thank you! I live in the Valley so it'll be great to have some places nearby worth checking out, and I'm especially hyped to visit these bookstores and restaurants. I've been to Skylight and Bob's Big Boy and walked past Figaro a bunch of times, but I think almost everything else on here will be new to me. Ahhh, so exciting!

Ooh yes the Valley has some great stuff. you might also like the Magnolia Park part of Burbank. Lots of fun vintage shops. https://visitburbank.com/neighborhoods/magnolia-park/

I've never been a resolution kind of a person, because I've never had the ability to follow-through on them. However, I like to set intentions for the year to help me grow as a person.

2022 has been a really tumultuous year for me. Some very big highs (bought a house!) and some terrible lows (my work situation being extremely untenable) but I think that the thing I learned most of all this year was exactly where my limit for other people's bullshit is, both professionally and personally. I said on twitter yesterday morning that something I've learned about fandom in the last year was to stop giving my time to things I am not actually that interested in and that has rippled through the rest of my life as well. It's a good lesson, I think, and one I'm planning to carry with me into 2023.

For the coming year, I intend, as usual, to practice radical kindness, to grow vegetables in my own garden, to write more, to read more, and to intentionally deepen my friendships and relationships with good and regular communication. I also really want to figure out how to get to California for a visit to see the many people who I love who live in your great state.

As for recipes! I'm a big fan of all things noodles, so I've got loads of those, and I love easy stuff that I can throw in the crock pot or the instant pot so I don't have to do anything with it, and it cooks itself and then I can just eat it. A bonus of these recipes, is that they often make tons of leftovers, so you have food for days.

Those are lovely intentions! Please feel free to send me all sorts of garden progress pics, I really love gardening and will live vicariously through your veggies.

Also, very well put re: deepening relationships, I think that's a goal of mine too. I put a lot of relationships on autopilot this year and did not enjoy doing that. But I also did a bit of what you mention here in terms of finding limits on the bullshit and reclaiming my time from things I don't care about. I forgot to mention it both here and in my thread today, but I think a big accomplishment I had this year was making Twitter less important in my mind, and (mostly) breaking that addiction to social media. I want to keep working on that in the new year because it really does turn into a whole lot of the day spent thinking about pointless debates that don't deserve to take up space in any of our brains.

I will take some noodle recipes! I don't have an instant pot or the space for one, but I do have a stovetop and big pots!

My gram's fried chicken recipe...

You'll need:

-Chicken breasts (cut in half so they are thinner) or tenders [I like tenders bc its less prep work]

-Eggs

-One or two sleeves of saltines

Steps:

-Get oil of your choice hot while you prep the chicken/eggs/crackers [I use a wooden utensil to watch for bubbles rather than a thermometer]

-Crush all the saltines in a quart-sized ziplock bag [cups or rolling pins work well for this part]. You don't want it super fine, but no huge chunks either

-Beat the eggs and put in a bowl

-Dip the chicken in eggs, then in saltines, then immediately into oil

-Do NOT set aside bc the crackers will get soggy. They gotta go straight into the hot oil.

-You don't really need to season with salt because the saltines have plenty. But you can season while they fry with whatever else you like—I recommend lemon pepper above all else

-Fry until golden brown all over (a couple minutes on each side usually does it)

-Set aside. I'll keep them covered while I cook the rest of the batch usually between two plates with a bit of space so that they don't get too steamy.

I don't use any measurements but this is an easy one to adjust for single person meals or bigger stuff. A small batch wouldn't take more than 30-45min and you can prep the crackers ahead of time if need be. It also reheats great in a microwave and goes best with some Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce!

In theory you could also do this in an air fryer but I haven't tinkered with it enough to avoid it getting soggy.
