I loved Taylor Tomlinson's special! It hit a chord of familiarity for me that made the jokes even funnier. I decided to throw the zeitgeist to the wind and rewatch White Collar. I'm only on S1 E2, but damn is Matt Bomer charming as hell!

This is so funny because I was JUST talking about White Collar today and how that show apparently has major throuple vibes. I watched the first season when it was new and barely remember any of it. I hope you enjoy it, please feel free to summarize it to me anytime.

omg I love this. There was an entire era of USA tv shows that, to me, has a similar nostalgic feeling as the Summer of MoviePass. Like the Psych/Royal Pains/White Collar/Covert Affairs/Suits suite of programming had me in an absolute chokehold for probably a decade. Are they consistently good? No. But would I still happily rewatch every single episode with uncritical affection? Yes!

Yes! So many of those remind me of y'all or other people from youth group. I'm pretty sure there was a time when we could've just left our church and started a cult around the show Psych and I don't even really understand why we all felt so strongly about it. I also loved Monk but that show felt like the end of an era, just before some of those other shows with shiny-haired people in pantsuits came along.

This last week, I've been watching the Earthstorm documentary on Netflix, which is all about weather disasters, which, as you know, is very my thing. It's narrated by Mimi Ndiweni, who is AMAZING and plays Fringilla in The Witcher.

Jan and I are also continuing our watch of The Golden Girls, as our dinner time sitcom. We tend to rotate through a couple of options, but Golden Girls seems to be sticking. There's something about those four ladies that really feels like home to me, and the things they are able to discuss on TV at the time this show was made! Amazing.

In listening news, I'm not a podcast person, but I've been mainlining my indie-folk playlist through November, and I'm starting to think about putting on my holiday season one, especially now that we have Phoebe Bridgers' annual Christmas cover to add to it.

I love that you're having a Golden Girls moment! It comforts me to know that that show exists because it feels like one I'll want to return to every decade of my life or so as different aspects of it become more relevant to my experiences. I had the same feeling when watching it, totally impressed by how much it was able to say and also by how unwilling it was to both sides things that matter. I think a lot of modern sitcoms don't have that moral clarity to them anymore and it's refreshing to see it loud and proud in that show.

Also, let me know if you have a favorite Phoebe Christmas song! I didn't know that was a thing!

Oh I do have a favourite Phoebe holiday tune! It's the one from a couple of years ago - 7 O'Clock News / Silent Night.

I've been working with a dietitian (whomst among us has made it through life without some degree of disordered eating) and I loved the food pyramid episode of Maintenance Phase so much that I immediately e-mailed her to recommend that she listen to it. So much of the work we do ends up circling back to capitalism & how we live in a society that is designed to make us suffer so that other people can make money, so this was just a flawless encapsulation of that.

Also, even though we've established that I'm deeply suspicious of Fred Armisen, I somehow ended up watching another show that he produced? This Fool on Hulu - I didn't realize he was connected until partway through. I do like seeing Michael Imperioli again in this & in White Lotus (not that he went anywhere - I just apparently haven't seen any of the things he's done between The Sopranos and now).

How exciting that you're working with someone who understands all those angles and complexities! I'm in a constant state of wanting to email everyone on earth Maintenance Phase episodes so I probably will bring them up here dozens more times despite saying I won't. The world needs to know!!!

Have you seen Michael Imperioli's Instagram? I love it, he posts intense screencaps of the Sopranos alongside announcements about meditation classes he's leading and stuff. I also feel inspired by The White Lotus to try to track down everything he's been doing since the Sopranos years. This Fool was not on my radar but I'll add it to my list now despite the Armisen of it all.
